Confidently pitching your freelance services can be a challenge, especially when you’re just getting started. Not only do you need to know how much to charge, but it takes time and practice to understand exactly how to position yourself in front of clients, what your scope of work should include, and how to communicate the value of what you offer.

That’s where Wethos comes in. Wethos’ all-in-one software is the easiest way to start and scale your freelance business with confidence.

Here’s how one freelancer used Wethos to confidently pitch his services, develop a streamlined system, and use his time saved to improve work-life balance.

Background

Dumaine Reid is a brand strategist and web designer based in Litchfield Park, Arizona. Reid considers himself a designer and artist with an arsenal of different creative skills from graphic design to illustration. This creative expertise is how he found himself working in brand strategy, brand identity, UX, and web design work.

Like many freelancers who have effectively become business owners, Reid, at first, found it challenging to translate his creative skills into pitchable services.

The Challenge: Lack of a Scoping Process

Figuring out what types of services to include in a freelance scope of work is always a challenge for freelancers who are just getting started. And for Reid, his lack of a clear scoping process made it hard for him to confidently pitch his services to clients.

“[Before Wethos], I was horrible at having clients,” Reid recalls. “I didn't understand how to build a scope or translate what I was doing to the client. I was really bad at selling myself.”

Reid knew that he needed a better way to communicate his services so he could better position himself in front of clients and win more projects.

While researching different tools and processes he could use to improve his business, Reid discovered Wethos and was specifically drawn to the scope of work templates. “I saw Wethos had web design templates already, and [thought] it was too good to be true,” he says.

Solution: Pre-Built Scope of Work Templates

After exploring the platform — which includes customizable scope of work templates with crowdsourced pricing recommendations, a proposal builder, and invoicing — Reid decided to put his newly discovered tool into action once he received an inquiry for a web design project.

“I plugged in my own services and plugged in my own [contract] terms,” he recalls. “Now, as soon as I get a new inquiry, I already know how I’m going to build my scope.”

Reid found that both the pre-built framework and customization capabilities of the templates were exactly what he needed to create better scopes to pitch to clients. “Even if you are a newbie at taking clients,” he says, “you can look at [a scope template] and scroll through the services library to get an idea of what you want to offer, and then take it from there.”

Results: A Streamlined System That Works for Business and Life

Using Wethos’ scope of work templates not only boosted Reid’s confidence, but also helped him launch an entirely new system for his freelance business.

“I developed a subscription-based project portal for my clients, and Wethos has been a really strong foundation [for that],” he says. “All I had to do was just trust myself and plug in how I want to handle things.”

Streamlining his services and business processes has allowed Reid to focus more on each client project that comes in, while also having more time to work on other parts of his business including expanding and revamping his own website.

Outside of the business, Reid has been able to use the time he’s saved with his new system to focus on better work-life balance. He’s currently prioritizing spending time with his family and doing things he didn’t have the time or mental capacity to focus on before.

“Now that I have the tools, I don’t really have anything to worry about,” says Reid. “I can do all the stuff I’ve wanted to do, but in peace.”

Reid’s advice for freelancers who are looking to streamline and scale their business with Wethos is in order to get the most out of the tool, you have to believe in your skills and expertise.

“[Wethos] can do the work for you, but you still have to trust yourself,” he says. “You have the templates, the invoicing, the scopes, but it's still gonna come down to trusting yourself.”

Before Wethos, Reid didn’t know how to communicate his offerings or pitch himself to potential clients. After using Wethos’ scope of work templates and building out his business processes, he now has the confidence to put together scopes as soon as he receives an inquiry and focus more on the work he loves to do and the life he’s building outside of his business.
